Emu Email Episode XXVII: Almost time for Vacation

Dear Emuers,
Friends and family, as time gets limited, I am forced to type this out on a Works document and paste it into my email…hopefully it works! Anyway, why is time short? Well…its cause I am so busy of course! I thought I might update you on a few things I am doing….
Teaching: Wow…this job doesn’t change except for each year I work longer days and get less done. My lack of short-term memory kind of hurts my organization, so that doesn’t help any. The kids are still kids. They still swear but can place it in a sentence very well unlike my Dad who usually just said 9 swear words in a row without using a preposition or sometimes even a noun. We still have students moving in every week. One girl from Texas still wears her Texas tank tops despite several warnings that our school was not a strip joint and despite our cold weather. It doesn’t help my male students focus that everything is apparently “bigger in Texas” ! When I am not dealing with the students, I am working with the teachers and administration as our Teacher’s Association President and on the school improvement team. Pres. Bush and I could talk at length about overextending our stay and low approval ratings, but on a bright note, all our improvement team is attempting to do is “Reinvent the High School” and save public education as we know it. That should be easy. Teaching is a lot like golf though….if you end it with something good, you want to come back. A student I did not think I made a connection with left me a hand-made birthday card on my birthday. I found it after she left and it was the cutest! She must have good parents, which reminds me…
Moderator: I moderated our town forum before election day about a month ago. No big positions up for grabs (we are inviting the govs. next year!), but 5 people running for 2 spots on the city council. I never had to but in, break up arguments, or yell “Sir, sit down, zip up your zipper, don’t use big words, and oh yeah, your 5 minutes are up”…so I must have done my job. But I did get to meet the above student’s Dad as he was a candidate for council. I am not sure if he had lost the debate yet, but during hour 2, I think he fell asleep while reclined in his chair, causing it to tip completely over and break. At that point, there were only 4 left to debate, he was officially off many’s ballots. I kept a straight face and even choked out “Are you OK”. Did I forget to mention this guy was a 6’6 270 lb. ex-Navy Seal? Anyway, he still received 12% of the vote which tells me Iowans miss Howard Dean and his scream! Coaching: I have demoted myself to 8th grade basketball….boys…assistant. Basically, I am paid very similar money to work less hours and coach the B team in what usually ends up in a glorified game crossed between Rugby, soccer, and “kick the can”. We are 1-0, but not due to coaching or a well-oiled offense attack. We pressed the other team, mainly outfitted in Rec-Specs and braces (both on teeth and legs), couldn’t dribble. Its nice playing in a league where refs remind me when I have more or less than 5 guys on the court, parents tell me “Wow…my son got some exercise” instead of “Wow…you suck…you sure you don’t ****Rest of blog lost...will try to find it saved somewhere***
